SAE J2807 is an SAE standard for determining the towing capacity of passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, and trucks. [1] It was written to allow consumers to more accurately compare vehicles from different manufacturers. First released in 2008, it has been periodically updated, with the 2020 version being the most current.
It is necessary to have an appropriate European driving license to drive a large goods vehicle in the European Union. There are four categories: Category C1 allows the holder to drive a large goods vehicle with a maximum authorized mass (gross vehicle weight) of up to 7,500 kg (16,500 lb) with a trailer having a maximum authorized mass of up to 750 kg (1,650 lb).
Dry weight is the weight of a vehicle without any consumables, passengers, or cargo. It is significantly less than the weight of a vehicle in a drivable condition and therefore rarely used. Quoting a dry weight can make a car's weight and power-to-weight figures appear far more favorable than those of rival cars using curb weight. [4] [5]
The new design specifications for a larger transporter as an additional series ranged from 2.8 tons gross vehicle weight to 3.5 tons. The layout was a conventional rear drive with the engine located above the front axle, in a forward control or 'cab over' design. The new Volkswagen van was launched in 1975 in Berlin.
A light commercial vehicle (LCV) in the European Union, Australia and New Zealand is a commercial carrier vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of no more than 3.5 metric tons (tonnes). [1] The LCV designation is also occasionally used in both Canada and Ireland (where the term commercial van is more commonly used).
National Pavement Cost Model (NAPCOM) estimates indicate that one 80,000-pound (36,000 kg) truck does as much damage to roads as 750 3,800-pound (1,700 kg) cars. [15] Some smaller bridges have a weight limit (or gross weight load rating) indicated by a posted sign (hence the reference to a "posted bridge").
There are also several sizes and weight categories of tow truck. The lightest models are usually based on light truck and van chassis offering boom and tow weights of around 5 to 10 short tons (4.5–9.1 metric tons), making them ideal for car towing. Medium-duty tow trucks have a boom capacity of 15 to 20 short tons (14–18 metric tons).
