It is the longest cave in Missouri and the 8th [3] or 11th [4] longest cave in the United States. In 1984 the cave was measured to be 28.20 miles (over 48,000 meters or 45.37 kilometers) long. [ 5 ] The Missouri Speleological Survey suggests the cave is more than 31.2 miles long.
The cave was first explored in the late 1880s. Commercial development of the cave began in the 1930s with the creation of Lake of the Ozarks by President Truman. [2] The developers added concrete walking paths, wooden bridges and lighting. Ozarks Caverns was commercially owned until it was bought by the Missouri state park system in 1979. [3]
The Grand Gulf is nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) long and up to 130 feet (40 m) deep with sheer sides. An uncollapsed part of the original cavern roof spans 250 feet (76 m), creating one of the largest natural bridges in Missouri. A watershed of 28 square miles (73 km 2) feeds into the gulf which itself drains into a cave entrance at its eastern end. [6]
