A1 Grand Prix Operations Ltd. operated as A1 Grand Prix (A1GP) was a "single-make" open-wheel auto racing series that ran from 2005 until 2009. It was unique in its field in that competitors solely represented their nation as opposed to themselves or a team, the usual format in most formula racing series.
Owner Rick Weidinger became interested in A1 Team USA and the A1 Grand Prix series when national franchises were being bid for the new series. Along with minority partners and friends Rusty Lewis and Bill Dean, Weidinger finalized the franchise acquisition in July 2005.

Each of the game's four race tracks is a named after a real Formula One circuit: Watkins Glen International, Brands Hatch, Bugatti Circuit, and Circuit de Monaco. All courses are tree-lined straight roads, lacking any curves. The shortest, simplest course is Watkins Glen. Brands Hatch is about twice as long as Watkins Glen, and has one bridge.
For the 2008-09 season Jeroen Bleekemolen returned as a driver, alongside A1GP rookie Robert Doornbos. Both drivers alternated races, starting with Bleekemolen at Zandvoort . [ 1 ] Team Netherlands finished 4th in the championship, with both drivers having scored one victory in a sprint race.
The game is a simulation of Formula One racing at the time and was noted for its 3D graphics, remarkably high framerate (25 fps) and attention to detail, in particular the player's ability to edit the teams and drivers and set up their car to their own personal specifications. A1 Team Ireland became the fourth A1GP champions, after a title battle which went down to the final round in Great Britain. Ireland won with 112 points, with team driver Adam Carroll taking five victories at Chengdu , Sepang , Taupo and the series finale at Brands Hatch during the shortened 14 race season.
