Chinese herbology (traditional Chinese: 中藥學; simplified Chinese: 中药学; pinyin: zhōngyào xué) is the theory of traditional Chinese herbal therapy, which accounts for the majority of treatments in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
The 1997 English version consists of two volumes: [3]. Volume 1 (Herbal medicine), 1997, ISBN 7-5025-2062-7 Volume 2 (Western medicine), 1997, ISBN 7-5025-2063-5 The 1997 Chinese version (in simplified Chinese) also consists of two volumes, but the English and Chinese versions are not direct translations of each other, as they are sorted differently as is in the current edition.
The 14th edition of the Japanese Pharmacopoeia (JP) (日本薬局方 Nihon yakkyokuhō) lists 165 herbal ingredients that are approved to be used in kampo remedies. [2] Tsumura (ツムラ) is the leading maker [3] making 128 of the 148 kampo medicines. The "count" column shows in how many of these 128 formulae the herb is found.
Many of these formulas were created by the pioneers of Chinese medicine and are quite old. For example, "Liu Wei Di Huang Wan" (六味地黄丸; liùwèi dìhuáng wán; liu-wei ti-huang wan) was developed by Qian Yi (钱乙 Qián Yǐ) (c. 1032–1113 CE).
