A click torque wrench. A torque wrench is a tool used to apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a nut, bolt, or lag screw. It is usually in the form of a socket wrench with an indicating scale, or an internal mechanism which will indicate (as by 'clicking', a specific movement of the tool handle in relation to the tool head) when a specified (adjustable) torque value has been reached ...
All have a torque-limiting clutch that disengages once the preset torque has been reached. Torque screwdrivers can exert torques from 0.04 N⋅m to at least 27 N⋅m. [1] Although no single tool covers the entire range, low-, mid-, and high-torque ranges are available. Torque screwdrivers and torque wrenches have similar purposes and mechanisms.
A key component of modern torque testers is the digital display. A digital display is used to measure the output signal from the transducer and calculates that reading into a torque value that is displayed on screen. In most cases the display and transducer are contained together inside a housing. This is known as a "Desktop Torque Tester".
The force and torque vectors that arise in applying Newton's laws to a rigid body can be assembled into a screw called a wrench. A force has a point of application and a line of action, therefore it defines the Plücker coordinates of a line in space and has zero pitch. A torque, on the other hand, is a pure moment that is not bound to a line ...
Torque wrenches do not give a direct measurement of the preload in the bolt. More accurate methods for determining the preload rely on defining or measuring the screw extension from the nut. Alternatively, measurement of the angular rotation of the nut can serve as the basis for defining screw extension based on the fastener's thread pitch . [ 11 ]

Most torque wrenches seem to have a working range measured in N-m or foot Lbs. Could someone add some information on this - eg what does N-m even stand for? Obscurasky 14:32, 10 February 2014 (UTC) N-m is a newton-meter: a unit of torque equal to the force of one newton at a radius of 1 meter. Glrx 22:01, 11 February 2014 (UTC)
