It lies precisely on the head of Downpatrick Head, 5 kilometres from the town of Ballycastle in County Mayo, Ireland. [6] At a distance of 20 metres and 228 metres deep, it lies just above the sea. It is 45 metres high, 63 metres wide and 23 metres wide.
On the morning of 9 April 1990, two UDR armoured Land Rovers were travelling from Ballykinler Barracks to Downpatrick. Allegedly, Saint Patrick died in Saul Monastery on 17 March 461 and is buried in nearby Downpatrick. The modern "Saint Patrick's Memorial Church" is built on the reputed spot of this building and includes a replica round tower. Saul has expanded closer into Downpatrick with new estates being built such as Saul Meadows, Saul Acres and Saul Manor.
