Chariton (/ ˈ ʃ ɛər ɪ t ən / SHAIR-it-ən) [4] is a city in, and the county seat of, Lucas County, Iowa, United States. [5] The population was 4,193 at the 2020 census. [6] Lucas is the primary distribution center for and the former corporate headquarters of the Hy-Vee supermarket chain.
The organization grew to encompass eight metropolitan areas and changed its name in 2013 to reflect that it was no longer exclusive to Iowa. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] In 2022, UnityPoint Health spun off Methodist, Proctor, and Pekin hospitals in Peoria , Illinois, to nonprofit Carle Health .

Lucas County's first courthouse was constructed of oak logs in 1850. The 1½-story building was built for $374, and paid for from the Chariton town lot fund. [3] [4] It measured 22 by 18 feet (6.7 by 5.5 m) and lime and sand filled the space between the logs.
