Ames. Bradlees was part of the Stop 'n Shop Companies which was a grocery chain also based in Mass. While there were Bradlees discount stores in the mid Atlantic region, with a buying office on Broadway in the garment center district in NYC; the grocery stores were only in the New England area.
The store was soon expanded to 7,500 and then 10,000 square feet, and was replaced in 1962 with a 45,000 square foot unit directly behind it. A second Zayre store opened in September 1956 in the Roslindale section of Boston, a much larger 39,000 square feet. Within a few years, Zayre stores would average 70,000 to 90,000 square feet. [5]

Later, in the 60s, they bought the three-store chain ORBIT'S stores and merged them into Bradlees. Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts were opening in suburban areas and in shopping plazas. In the early 1950s, Stop & Shop entered Connecticut and Rhode Island, in the early 1960s in New York, and the late 1960s in New Jersey.

Despite the addition of these anchor stores, the mall's occupancy declined in the 1990s. A mall-wide renovation at the end of the decade added Boscov's and expanded JCPenney while reconfiguring the main mall concourse. The former Bradlees was subdivided, and The Home Depot and Regal Cinemas were added on outparcels in 1998. [2] [4]
