Raja Ravi Varma Art gallery is set up by the Kerala Lalithakala Akademi [1] at Kilimanoor, the birthplace of the renowned painter Raja Ravi Varma.It displays nearly 50 paintings of Raja Ravi Varma.It is now permanently closed.
Raja Ravi Varma (Malayalam: [ɾaːdʒaː ɾɐʋi ʋɐrm(ː)ɐ]) (29 April 1848 – 2 October 1906 [3] [4]) was an Indian painter and artist.His works are one of the best examples of the fusion of European academic art with a purely Indian sensibility and iconography.
The gallery has 15 original works by the Roerichs [7] and 43 original works by Raja Ravi Varma. [8] Ravi Varma's rare pencil sketches are also displayed at the gallery. [8] The paintings of Ravi Varma which were earlier kept at Chithralaya in Kilimanoor were given to the art gallery by the Kilimanoor Palace as a permanent loan in 1941. [9]
The collection includes portraits of the royal family in addition to the paintings based on Hindu mythology for which Raja Ravi Varma was famous. There is a collection of sculptures in marble and bronze. These include copies of great masters in bronze commissioned by the Maharaja and also originals by renowned artists.
Mangala Bayi demonstrated a particular talent for portraiture, and a painting of her brother, Raja Ravi Varma, is still on display in the Sree Chitra Art Gallery in Thiruvananthapuram.
