On 31 May 1930, the airport was officially opened by Prince George, Duke of Kent. In its first year of operation, the airport handled 915 passengers, and by 1939 it handled 4,000 passengers. [2] The Bristol and Wessex Aeroplane Club relocated from Filton Airfield, [3] and together with Bristol Corporation, managed the facilities. [4]
Entwistle is a village in the civil parish of North Turton, in the Blackburn with Darwen unitary authority area in the ceremonial county of Lancashire, England. Its name derives from the Old English ened and twisla which means a river fork frequented by ducks. The name was recorded as Hennetwisel in 1212, Ennetwysel in 1276 and Entwissell in 1311.
Built on the site of a former RAF airfield, it opened in 1957 as Bristol (Lulsgate) Airport, [4] replacing Bristol (Whitchurch) Airport as Bristol's municipal airport. From 1997 to 2010, it was known as Bristol International Airport . [ 5 ]
The hotel was renovated in 2017 in a £5 million refurbishment program, and is now known as the Mercure Bristol Grand Hotel. Entwistle railway station (first opened in 1848) is 5 + 3 ⁄ 4 miles (9.3 km) north of Bolton and serves the village of Entwistle. It is also the closest station to Edgworth. Owing to the remote location and low passenger numbers, Entwistle was a request stop for several years. After 21 May 2023, it was no longer a request stop.
