In 1859 Charles and Joseph Hackley started their own firm, J.H. Hackley & Company. By 1881 Charles Hackley partnered with Thomas Hume to run the very successful lumbering firm of Hackley and Hume. By this time, Hackley had diversified his business interests, and was the leading financial and industrial presence in Muskegon. [3]
Greenmead Farms was originally the farm of Joshua Simmons, who moved to the property in 1825. The farm includes the 1829 North Barn (the first barn built in Livonia) and an 1841 Greek Revival farmhouse. Additional structures, including four mid-19th-century farmhouses, have been moved to the property as the surrounding area has been developed. 40
The Thumb Octagon Barn is an historic and unique barn located outside Gagetown, Michigan. It was built in 1924 [1] by local businessman James Purdy who hired local builders George and John Munro to construct the barn. Purdy was inspired to build the unique barn when he saw similar barns in Iowa. Purdy sold his farm in 1942.
