Looking northwards over Windermere. Bowness-on-Windermere is a town and former civil parish, now in the parish of Windermere and Bowness, in the Westmorland and Furness district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England. It lies next to Lake Windermere and the town of Windermere to the north east and within the Lake District National Park.

The parish was formed on 1 April 1974 from the previous parishes of Windermere and Bowness on Windermere [5] as a successor parish to Windermere Urban District and became part of South Lakeland district. [6] On 29 July 2020 the merged parish was renamed from "Windermere" to "Windermere and Bowness". [7]
The town lies about half a mile (1 km) east of the lake, Windermere, from which it takes its name. [2] In 2021 it had a population of 4,826. [3] While Windermere town does not itself touch the lake, it forms one urban area with the older town of Bowness-on-Windermere, which is directly on the lake shore.
Ambleside Pier at Waterhead, about one mile south of the town centre, is a boarding point for Windermere Lake Cruises on Windermere. Services run year-round connecting to Bowness-on-Windermere and Lakeside. Between March and October, a second service operates to the Brockhole Lake District Visitor Centre and Wray Castle. [30] [31]
