Lai Ching-te (Chinese: 賴清德; pinyin: Lài Qīngdé; born 6 October 1959), also known as William Lai, is a Taiwanese politician and former physician who is currently serving as the 8th president of the Republic of China since May 2024.
Lai and running mate Hsiao Bi-khim won the 2024 presidential election with 5.58 million votes, breaking the practice of two-term political party rotation with the Kuomintang since the first direct presidential election in 1996, and retaining the presidency for the Democratic Progressive Party for a record consecutive third term.
Vice President Lai Ching-te, seen as a potential candidate for the 2024 presidential election which Tsai is ineligible for re-election, was the only candidate in the by-election. Lai announced his candidacy on 8 December 2022, with the whole party reportedly united in support.
