The Kuki people, or Kuki-Zo people, [2] are an ethnic group in the Northeastern Indian states of Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram, [3] as well as the neighbouring countries of Bangladesh and Myanmar. [4] The Kukis form one of the largest hill tribe communities in this region.
The Karbi languages may be closely related to Kuki-Chin, but Thurgood (2003) and van Driem (2011) leave Karbi unclassified within Sino-Tibetan. [4] [5]The Kuki-Chin branches listed below are from VanBik (2009), with the Northwestern branch added from Scott DeLancey, et al. (2015), [6] and the Khomic branch (which has been split off from the Southern branch) from Peterson (2017).
This changed over the following decades, with the Kuki tribes migrating north and settling throughout the hills of Manipur. [5] This was assumed to be due to pressure from the tribes further south, the Lushais (present-day Mizos) and Kamhau-Suktes. This movement caused the Kuki and Naga tribes to live side by side throughout the hills of Manipur.

The Kuki Rebellion or Anglo-Kuki War, [3] was one of the major tribal revolts during the British colonial rule in India. It was a rebellion by the Kuki tribes of Manipur , ostensibly to resist their forcible recruitment into labour corps for the First World War .
