The main high-pressure oil (HPO) system components are the high-pressure oil pump (HPOP), HPO manifolds, stand pipes, and branch tube. The HPOP is located in the engine valley at the rear of the engine block.
The LLV (also called Vortec 2900) is a 2.9 L; 178.3 cu in (2,921 cc) straight-4 DOHC engine produced between 2007 and 2012, with a 95.5 mm × 102 mm (3.76 in × 4.02 in) bore and a stroke. It replaced the LK5 and produced 185 hp (138 kW) at 5,600 rpm and 190 lb⋅ft (258 N⋅m) of torque at 2,800 rpm.
The firing order of older big-block engines is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 [62] while Vortec 8100's firing order is 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3. Other upgrades of Vortec 8100 include a new 18-bolt head bolt pattern, longer connecting rods, different symmetrical intake ports, different oil pan rails, and the use of metric threads throughout the engine.

Overall engine output was unchanged from the earlier 3.8 L. It appeared as a running change on late-production 2004 Mustangs starting on October 7, 2003, then was replaced by the 4.0 L SOHC Ford Cologne V6 when the Mustang was redesigned for 2005. The 3.9 L continued in use in the Ford Freestar minivan until production of the engine ended in 2007.
