Jasper National Park, in Alberta, Canada, is the largest national park within Alberta's Rocky Mountains, spanning 11,000 km 2 (4,200 sq mi). It was established as Jasper Forest Park in 1907, renamed as a national park in 1930, and declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984. Its location is north of Banff National Park and west of Edmonton.
On July 26, Parks Canada revealed that 358 of the 1,113 structures within the Jasper townsite were damaged by the wildfire while all critical infrastructure such as the hospital, schools, and wastewater treatment plant were saved. [14] On July 27, the Municipality of Jasper released a map and list of addresses of the structures damaged by the fire.

Jasper was created as a railway siding in 1911 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. It was originally called Fitzhugh, part of the Grand Trunk Pacific's alphabet line, but was renamed in 1913 when the townsite was surveyed. By 1913 both the Grand Trunk and the Canadian Northern Railway called on Jasper. [2]

Jasper Avenue is a major public transit route as several of Edmonton's busiest bus routes travel along it. The LRT travels underneath Jasper Avenue between 99 and 110 Streets. It is named after Jasper Hawes, manager of a North West Company trading post of Jasper House in the early 1800s, located in present-day Jasper National Park. [2]
