Foard County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census , its population was 1,095. [ 1 ] Its county seat is Crowell , [ 2 ] which is also the county's only incorporated community.
Crowell is located near the center of Foard County and U.S. Route 70 passes through the city as Commerce Street, leading east 33 miles (53 km) to Vernon and west 36 miles (58 km) to Paducah. Texas State Highway 6 (Main Street) crosses US 70 in the center of Crowell, leading north 22 miles (35 km) to Quanah and south 28 miles (45 km) to Benjamin.
The Waggoner Ranch is a historic ranch located 13 miles south of Vernon, Texas, in north Texas near the Red River and Oklahoma border. Founded in 1852 by Daniel Waggoner, [2] it is the largest ranch within one fence in the United States. [3] [4] The land has been used to raise crops, beef cattle, and horses and to produce oil.
When Foard County was established in 1891, Thalia was located within the borders of the new county. Thalia was incorporated in 1926 with a population of 50. A high school was opened in 1930. Perdido County, formed in 1824 and forgotten during the upheavals of the 1840s. Perdido was reportedly abolished in 1858 and again in 1871.
