Norwegian Breakaway is a cruise ship of Norwegian Cruise Line. It, along with Norwegian Getaway, are the first two ships in "Project Breakaway" ordered by Norwegian Cruise Line. They were named through a public contest - a contestant submitted the name Norwegian Breakaway, which was announced on 14 September 2011.
The Breakaway class is a class of cruise ships owned and operated by Norwegian Cruise Line, Cruise Saudi (Aroya Cruises), and Resorts World Cruises. This class is an original design, and has two sub-classes. Although most ships of the class have subtle changes between one another, they all have the same general design.
We sailed on an older and newer ship on Norwegian Cruise Line: 11-year-old Breakaway and two-year-old Prima. Breakaway was larger but had markedly less exciting family-friendly amenities.
Norwegian Getaway is the sister vessel of Norwegian Breakaway, and was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany, for Norwegian Cruise Line. [6] The name of the ship was selected in a competition, and was submitted by Dennis Hultman of Vienna, Virginia, United States. [7] NCL expected the ship to be based out of Miami year-round. [8]
