The idea for the Greek Theatre originated with wealthy landowner Griffith J. Griffith, who donated 3,000 acres (1,200 ha) of land to the city of Los Angeles in 1896 to create Griffith Park. [2] In his will he left money for the construction of a Greek theatre. A canyon site was chosen because of its good acoustics.
The Los Angeles City Council designated the building a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1992. A $4 million renovation, with retro-futuristic interior and electric lighting designed by Walt Disney Imagineering , was completed before the Encounter Restaurant opened there in 1997 but is no longer in business. Googie's Coffee Shop (styled googies) was a small restaurant located at 8100 Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles next door to the famous Schwab's Pharmacy at the beginning of the Sunset Strip.
