John Muir (/ m jʊər / MURE; April 21, 1838 – December 24, 1914), [1] also known as "John of the Mountains" and "Father of the National Parks", [2] was a Scottish-born American [3] [4]: 42 naturalist, author, environmental philosopher, botanist, zoologist, glaciologist, and early advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.
Ronald Limbaugh's book, John Muir's "Stickeen" and the Lessons of Nature (1996) reconstructs the original manuscript submitted by Muir in 1897. [a] Many later editions were printed throughout the 20th century that included artwork, children's adaptions, audio, music and video.
The fifth and final volume was published in 1870 and was on the Vedic mythology. Muir was also the author of a volume of metrical translations from the Sanskrit, an anonymous work on inspiration, several works in Sanskrit, and many essays in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society and elsewhere. John Muir, also from the late 19th century, advocated for the preservation of Earth for its own sake, establishing the Sierra Club. Aldo Leopold's 1949 collection of essays, A Sand County Almanac, established a "land ethic" and has set the stage for modern environmental ethics, calling for conservation and preservation of nature and wilderness.
