Fort Leonard Wood is a U.S. Army training installation located in the Missouri Ozarks.The main gate is located on the southern boundary of the city of St. Robert.The post was created in December 1940 and named in honor of General Leonard Wood (former Chief of Staff) in January 1941.
The battalion is currently part of the U.S. Army Engineer School, headquartered at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and is a subordinate unit to the 1st Engineer Brigade. The battalion mainly conducts advanced individual training for engineering vertical skills and specialty engineering skills.
In 1935, Camp Humphreys was renamed Fort Belvoir. [3] After 68 years, in 1988, the home of the Engineer School was moved to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri "due to a shortage of land for training at Fort Belvoir" [3] The move also allowed engineer training of officers, warrant officers and enlisted to be conducted in the same location. [4]
Most of the 554th was then based at Camp Smith at Bao Loc, while some elements of the 554th were based at Camp Fennell beyond Bao Loc (Towards Da Lat). However Company C of the 554th was based at Camp Brown at the bottom of the mountain pass about 26 miles from Bao Loc. The battalion maintained QL-20 from Camp Brown to the Camp Fennell area.
The unit was redesignated on 1 January 1938, as the 92nd Engineer Battalion and activated on 1 May 1941 at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The enlisted cadre for the 92nd Engineer Battalion was furnished by the 41st Engineer Regiment and numbered 49 men.

In May 1945, when the war ended in Europe, the battalion was moved to Plattling, Germany where they built a camp for displaced refugees. In November 1945, the 249th Engineers were sent on their final orders to Camp Lucky Strike, near Marseilles, France and then redeployed back to the United States.
