Cornell is located in northwestern Livingston County in the northeastern part of Amity Township. Illinois Route 23 passes through the village, leading northwest 14 miles (23 km) to Streator and southeast 12 miles (19 km) to Pontiac, the Livingston county seat.
This is very likely as the earliest settlers in the township were from Ohio. It was mentioned in the same 1878 history that Amity means friendship. [1] The township was officially organized on April 6, 1858, and was one of the first 20 townships in Livingston County organized in 1858. [1] In 1871 a railroad was completed through the township.

The Fletcher Norman Horse Company closed in 1929, ceasing almost all future growth of the suburb. Following incorporation in 1958, Wayne experienced a period of growth, but the older buildings in the village were mostly maintained. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 1978.
