Dayananda Gunawardena was born on 15 October 1934 in Halgampitiya, Udugampola Sri Lanka. His father, Don Simon, was an English teacher. Gunawardena completed his schooling at the Ugampola Government School (1943–46) and continued his education at the Veyngoda Government Secondary School (1946–51).

He was born on 29 November 1939 in Galle. He completed his education at Richmond College, Galle. He entered the University of Peradeniya in 1956 and obtained an Honors Degree in English. After obtaining his degree, he moved back to Galle and worked as an English teacher and the teacher-in-charge of drama at Richmond College.
