The history of commercial passenger shipping on the Great Lakes is long but uneven. It reached its zenith between the mid-19th century and the 1950s. As early as 1844, palace steamers carried passengers and cargo around the Great Lakes.
SS William Edenborn was a 497 ft (151 m) long Great Lakes bulk freighter that was built in 1900 and she was given the title Queen of the Lakes due to her length. She sailed from 1900, to 1962 when she was sunk as a breakwater at Cleveland , Ohio where she was buried under 39 feet of dredgings from the Cuyahoga River .
Great Lakes Fleet was formed on July 1, 1967, when U.S. Steel consolidated its Great Lakes shipping operations by merging the Pittsburgh Steamship Division and its sister fleet, the Bradley Transportation Company forming the USS Great Lakes Fleet. [2] In 1981, Great Lakes Fleet was spun off into a U.S. Steel-owned subsidiary, Transtar, Inc. [3]
In this trade, it was described in 2019 as making about 30 annual trips to the Port of Chicago. [ 2 ] The lake vessel's now-redundant pilothouse was conserved and, in spring 2015, was donated to the National Museum of the Great Lakes for display in Toledo, Ohio . [ 5 ]
The SS Badger made its first voyage on March 21, 1953. Its last operational voyage was Nov. 16, 1990, but it was revived in May 1992.
SS Edward L. Ryerson is a steel-hulled American Great Lakes freighter that entered service in 1960. Built between April 1959 and January 1960 for the Inland Steel Company, she was the third of the thirteen so-called 730-class of lake freighters, each of which shared the unofficial title of "Queen of the Lakes", as a result of their record-breaking length.
Although she was used for excursions elsewhere around the Great Lakes, her regular schedule was a daily trip to Milwaukee, leaving Chicago mid-morning, sailing to Milwaukee for a two-hour stopover, and then returning (see advertisement right).
