The choir was formed by Tim Rhys-Evans, a classically trained singer and former musical director of Welsh National Youth Opera. It originally had 15 members and is based in Cardiff. Timothy Rhys-Evans MBE FRWCMD (born c. 1972) [1] is a Welsh conductor and best known as the founder and musical director of the choir Only Men Aloud! [2] and Only Boys Aloud. He also formed the children's choir Only Kids Aloud in 2012. [3] Rhys-Evans, from New Tredegar, was a vocal tutor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. [4]
Recent full-scale WNO Youth Opera productions include Brundibár (2019), Kommilitonen! (2016), and Paul Bunyan (2013). The groups meets regularly in throughout the academic year with and work with directors, vocal coaches and musicians to improve performance skills, as well as collaborating with composers and writers in the creation of new pieces.
The words sung in Welsh to "Rachie" are typically I Bob Un Sydd Ffyddlon, [4] and were written by Henry Lloyd (1870-1946), who is better known by his bardic name Ap Hefin. [5] [1] The lyrics are a call to battle, this can also be seen in the English translation. The words express a similar call to arms as does the hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers".
The choir's self-titled debut album was released in November 2012. Cantorion Colin Jones a Welsh concert choir founded by the late Colin Jones on the 1st September 1991 in the Lecture Theatre of Plas Coch College (later Glyndŵr University). The Choir united many of the finest singers whom Colin had taught earlier, many amongst these singers conducted in choirs across North Wales. [citation needed]
