The Ironton Fighting Tigers are a member of the Ohio Valley Conference (excluding football). Currently, the other members of the conference include Chesapeake High School (Panthers), Coal Grove High School (Hornets), Fairland High School (Dragons), South Point High School (Pointers), Rock Hill High School (Redmen), Portsmouth High School (Trojans), Gallia Academy High School (Blue Devils).
Ironton was founded in 1849 by John Campbell, [6] a prominent pig iron manufacturer in the area. He chose the location of Ironton because of its site along the Ohio River, which would allow for water transport of iron ore to markets downriver. Between 1850 and 1890, Ironton was one of the foremost producers of iron in the world.
The Ironton Tanks originally played in Beechwood Stadium but following through on local enthusiasm a stadium fund was created and Tank Stadium was built in 1926. This stadium still stands today and is being used by Ironton High School. It is one of the last covered stadiums in use for high school football today. [1]

Robert "Bob" Lutz is the former head football coach of Ironton High School and Saint Joseph Central High School, both in Ironton, Ohio.In 2009, Lutz passed former Hamilton Catholic High School and Father Stephen T. Badin High School head coach Terry Malone for the record of most wins in Ohio high school football history with his 361st career victory.
Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School is a private, Catholic high school in Ironton, Ohio. It is operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Steubenville. The school's sports teams are known as the Flyers. In addition to housing the high school grades of 9-12, the school also houses junior high grades 7–8.
Ohio University Southern Campus is a satellite campus of Ohio University in Ironton, Ohio. The campus also has an extension in Proctorville, Ohio, and the Ohio Horse Park in Franklin Furnace, Ohio. The university began in 1956 when it hosted college-level classes in Ironton High School with an initial enrollment of 90 students. [4]
The Ironton minor league teams hosted 1911 to 1915 home games at Beechwood Park. The park is still in use today as a public park, owned by Ironton High School and maintained by the city of Ironton. The ballpark is located at South 9th Street & Helpler Street, Ironton, Ohio. [25] [26]
