At the ruins, Zuko reveals that the dragons were hunted to extinction at the encouragement of his great-grandfather, Fire Lord Sozin, and that the last dragon was slain by his uncle, Iroh. After opening a chamber in the ruins, Aang and Zuko imitate a dance depicted by a series of statues to uncover a pedestal with a large, egg-shaped gem.
A century of warfare have corrupted the Fire Nation's rich culture, and with it, their firebending-styles "regressed" into militarized format based on hatred and raw aggression; Zuko and Aang sought to learn firebending in its purest and most harmonious form, and rediscovered Dancing Dragon Style from the last surviving dragons.
Aang and Zuko travel to Sun Warriors' ruins, where Zuko reveals that Sozin began the tradition of hunting dragons for glory to the point of extinction, with the last dragon being conquered by Iroh. After being caught in a trap, Aang and Zuko discover the Sun Warriors still exist.
There they find Sokka and Aang have snuck into the party as helpers, but just as the Earth King joins the party, Dai Li agents capture the group as well as Momo. Meanwhile, Jet bursts into the teashop challenging Zuko and Iroh to a fight hoping they will firebend at him. However, Zuko steals someone's swords and the two duel throughout the city.
However, Iroh convinces Zuko to abandon his quest and let Appa go. Azula infiltrates the city to stage a coup and arranges a trap for Zuko and Iroh. Imprisoned together with Aang's friend Katara, Zuko is rescued alongside her by Aang and Iroh, only to be convinced by Azula to betray Iroh, Katara and the Avatar and finally regain his honor.
Zuko abandons the Fire Nation to join Aang and teach him firebending. Aang, raised by monks to respect all life, wrestles with the possibility that he will have to kill Ozai to end the war. When Sozin's comet returns, Aang confronts Ozai and uses his Avatar powers to strip Ozai of his firebending ability; meanwhile, Aang's friends liberate Ba ...
