Azure-blue Anagallis arvensis, a blue form. Anagallis arvensis (syn. Lysimachia arvensis), commonly known as the scarlet pimpernel, red pimpernel, red chickweed, poor man's barometer, poor man's weather-glass, [1] shepherd's weather glass or shepherd's clock, is a species of low-growing annual plant with brightly coloured flowers, [2] most often scarlet but also bright blue and sometimes pink.
It grows as a vine or creeper, doing well in moist, neutral soil. Its most striking feature is the color of its flowers, a vivid deep blue; solitary, with light yellow markings. They are about 4 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 in) long by 3 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) wide. Some varieties yield white flowers and pink.
The Menelaus blue morpho (Morpho menelaus) is one of thirty species of butterfly in the subfamily Morphinae. [1] Its wingspan is approximately 12 cm (4.7"), and its dorsal forewings and hindwings are a bright, iridescent blue edged with black, while the ventral surfaces are brown. [ 2 ]
In the display, the male hangs from a branch upside down. The black oval with a red margin at the center of his chest is rhythmically enlarged and contracted. His violet-blue plumes spread out in a fan, looking like an apron, swaying its body back and forth while the black wires form two impressive arches down to either side.
Its wings are bright white with a pattern of neat black blotches, some solid and some hollow. The overside of the abdomen is dark blue with orange markings, while the underside is white with solid black spots, and males have a narrow yellow line on the sides. Their legs have black and white bands.

The name is derived from the Ancient Greek word phlox meaning flame in reference to the intense flower colors of some varieties. [2] Fertilized flowers typically produce one relatively large seed . The fruit is a longitudinally dehiscent capsule with three or more valves that sometimes separate explosively.
The flowers open when they are in sunlight and close at night. [10] They are pollinated by small bees and flies. Seeds develop in green pods 4 to 6 cm (1 + 1 ⁄ 2 to 2 + 1 ⁄ 4 in) long, and ripen before the foliage goes dormant. The seeds are round and black to orange-red when ripe, and have white elaiosomes, which are eaten by ants. [8]
