Catalpa, generally known as Wallace Farm, is a historic farm located near the small city of Orient, Iowa, United States.It is associated with Henry Cantwell Wallace, who owned and operated the influential agricultural publication Wallaces' Farmer, and served as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture (1921-1924).
The Wallace House Foundation was established in 1988 to purchase and restore the home. In 2000 a 100-year-old oak tree on the north side of the Wallace House was named Iowa's Millennium Tree. [5] The garden was redesigned in 2008. The house is now owned by The Wallace Centers of Iowa who maintain it as a house museum and for its own purposes.
The Henry C. Wallace House is a historic residence located in Winterset, Iowa, United States. Wallace was the father of U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Henry C. Wallace, Jr. and the grandfather of U.S. Vice President Henry A. Wallace. He was a Presbyterian minister who moved to Winterset in 1877.
The Wallace House at 756 16th St. in Sherman Hill was the home of Henry A. Wallace's grandfather, the first of three Henry Wallaces who were influential in Iowa agriculture and politics.
Wallace's sons had been publishing The Farm and Dairy since 1893, and he joined in its operation; the Wallace name was added in 1895, and the publication's name was shorted to Wallaces' Farmer in 1898. The Iowa Homestead and Wallaces' Farmer were bitter rivals, and Wallace family ultimately bought out The Iowa Homestead in 1929. [1]
