Kenya Airways was established by the Government of Kenya on 22 January 1977, following the collapse of the East African Union and the consequent folding of East African Airways. [1] It first flew on 4 February 1977 servicing the London– Nairobi route with a Boeing 707 –321 leased from British Midland Airways .
The prefabricated terminal opened in April 2015 with a capacity of 2.5M passengers. It was originally intended to relieve overcrowding. Terminal 2 houses international and domestic check-in desks and boarding gates. Current lounges at Terminal 2 include the Mara Lounge and Mount Kenya Lounge, both at airside, Level 1, and open 24 hours.
In-town check-in service is a service offered by some cities such as Abu Dhabi, Seoul, Hong Kong, Delhi, Kuala Lumpur–International, London, Stockholm, Vienna and Taipei, where passengers may check in luggage in designated places within the city but outside the airport. This reduces check-in time and queuing at the airport.
In October 2014, KLM stopped operating the flight in favour of offering codeshare flights operated by Kenya Airways from Nairobi. [12] [13] In 2015, the government of Zambia began a three-year, US$360 million expansion and improvement of the airport, with funds borrowed from the Exim Bank of China. [14]
