Lake Atoka Reservoir (also called Atoka Lake) is a reservoir in southeastern Oklahoma, 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Atoka, Oklahoma, county seat of Atoka County, Oklahoma. It was built in 1959 to expand the water supply for Lake Stanley Draper in Oklahoma City and Atoka.
On February 25, 2011, the pipeline was brought back to full service allowing water to be pumped from Lake Atoka to Draper. From February 2011 the lake's water level remained low due to the lack of heavy rainfall because of the then ongoing drought and water usage by residents of Oklahoma City. [5]
The lake covers 14,360 acres (58 km 2) with 117 miles (188 km) of shoreline.The lake is an impoundment of Jackfork Creek, a tributary of the Kiamichi River. [1] Sardis Lake is surrounded by the Winding Stair Mountains on the north and east, the Kiamichi Mountains on the south, and the Jackfork Mountains to the west, all of which are subranges of the Ouachita Mountains.
