Martin (Slovak pronunciation: ⓘ; until 1951 Turčiansky Svätý Martin, Hungarian: Turócszentmárton, German: Turz-Sankt Martin, Latin: Sanctus Martinus / Martinopolis) is a city in northern Slovakia, situated on the Turiec river, between the Malá Fatra and Veľká Fatra mountains, near the city of Žilina.
Martin is named for Captain William Martin. [5] William Martin was born in Halifax County, Virginia in 1806, and moved to Weakley County, Tennessee with his wife Sarah in 1832. [5]

Martin is located near the center of Floyd County. Kentucky Routes 80 and 122 run along the western side of the city. KY 80 leads southwest 41 miles (66 km) to Hazard and north 5 miles (8 km) to U.S. Route 23 at a point 3 miles (5 km) south of Prestonsburg, the county seat.
