An IP packet is the smallest message entity exchanged via the Internet Protocol across an IP network. IP packets consist of a header for addressing and routing, and a payload for user data. The header contains information about IP version, source IP address, destination IP address, time-to-live, etc. The payload of an IP packet is typically a ...

IP has the task of delivering packets from the source host to the destination host solely based on the IP addresses in the packet headers. For this purpose, IP defines packet structures that encapsulate the data to be delivered. It also defines addressing methods that are used to label the datagram with source and destination information.
The ROHC protocol takes advantage of information redundancy in the headers of the following: one single network packet (e.g. the payload lengths in IP and UDP headers) several network packets that belong to one single stream (e.g. the IP addresses) Redundant information is transmitted in the first packets only.
This field is the length of the encapsulated IP packet (including Outer IP Header, Inner IP Header, IP Payload). Identification: 16 bits This field is used to identify the fragments of a datagram which will be helpful while reassembling the datagram as the encapsulator might fragment the datagram. For the Outer IP Header, a new number is generated.

The message header is completed with the operation code for request (1) and reply (2). The payload of the packet consists of four addresses, the hardware and protocol address of the sender and receiver hosts. The principal packet structure of ARP packets is shown in the following table which illustrates the case of IPv4 networks running on ...
