The new route was incorporated into the state highway system and re-designated as Highway 1 in 1939. In 1940, the state contracted for "the largest installation of guard rail ever placed on a California state highway", calling for 12 miles (19 km) of steel guard rail and 3,649 guide posts along 46.6 miles (75.0 km) of the road. [39]
It is located 7.25 miles (12 km) north-northwest of Westport, [2] at an elevation of 30 feet (9 m). [1] Rockport started as a small company town serving the timber industry [3] on the Pacific Ocean coast among redwood forests in Northern California. [4]
At the north end, State Route 211 begins its journey at Ferndale, heading towards Highway 101 in Fernbridge. Section 511 of the California Streets and Highways Code still says that "Route 211 is from Route 1 near Rockport to Route 101 near Fernbridge", but it is unlikely that the portion of Route 1 south of Ferndale will be built.
However, the Sierra Club sued to stop construction, as California law requires that State Route 1 be restricted to two lanes in rural areas. The 101-foot-wide (31 m) road bed, complete with continuous uphill passing lanes , runaway truck ramps, and extra-wide shoulders, would be the widest two-lane road in the state.
