The tree is located on the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. [1] It is currently the largest known Western redcedar in the world, [2] (compare to the Cheewhat Giant on Canada's Vancouver Island. [3]
It is by far the largest species of spruce and the fifth-largest conifer in the world (behind giant sequoia, coast redwood, kauri, and western red cedar), [3] and the third-tallest conifer species (after coast redwood and South Tibetan cypress). The Sitka spruce is one of only four species documented to exceed 100 m (300 ft) in height. [2]
