During the 1880s, the company won awards in the United States and Europe for its high relief decorative art tiles, which ornamented such objects as candlesticks, cast-iron stoves, clocks, fireplace surrounds, soda fountains, trivets, and walls.
By the 1800s, most new fireplaces were made up of two parts, the surround and the insert. The surround consisted of the mantelpiece and side supports, usually in wood, marble or granite. The insert was where the fire burned, and was constructed of cast iron often backed with decorative tiles.
Of course, that kitchen renovation was a key part of the project, which entailed removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen to create a line of sight from the front door.
Among the hotel's architectural features, the Rookwood tiles composing the fireplace surround in the Fireside Room are especially noteworthy. The hotel was bought by the Malone Family in the 1980s who fully renovated the building. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021. [3]
