Lake Tarpon is a freshwater lake located about 10 miles (16 km) west of Tampa in Palm Harbor and Tarpon Springs, Florida. Lake Tarpon is the largest freshwater lake in Pinellas County with a surface area of 2,534 acres (10.25 km 2). [1] Its watershed encompasses 52 square miles (130 km 2).
The area was originally known by the indigenous Americans as Ocklawaha, and was first settled in the early 1830s, when Lucius A. Church purchased 2,000 acres (809 ha) for a plantation. The name of the area was formally changed to Cherry Lake in 1837, reflecting the name of the body of water it borders. [2]
