The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. The cathedral, for which the cornerstone was laid on August 14, 1927, was dedicated on October 14, 1928. The cathedral complex is built in a modified Greek Revival architectural style. [2]

In 1848, the first Catholic church in Springfield, St. John the Baptist, was constructed. [8] On July 29, 1853, Pope Pius IX erected the Diocese of Quincy, based in Alton, taking its territory from the Diocese of Chicago. He appointed Joseph Melcher of St. Louis to serve as bishop, both in Quincy and Chicago.
