Today's Winnipeg is the product of the City of Winnipeg Act of 1972, which incorporated a number of cities, towns, and rural municipalities into a single larger city (previously administered under the Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg, since 1960) into an amalgamated unicity. Between St. Matthews and Dublin Avenues, it splits into separate one-way streets, with Century as the northbound and King Edward Street as the southbound. Boundary Street ran along the original western boundary of Winnipeg before the city expanded westward to St. James Street in 1882. Maryland Street is named after the Maryland estate that was formerly located on that road, which was owned by James Milligan, the namesake of Milligan Street. [4] [5]
The streets join at their intersection with Rue Youville just west of the Seine River, and the two-way road continues as Marion Street eastward to Lagimodiere Boulevard. The route jogs north on Lagimodiere for approximately 450 meters before continuing eastward as Dugald Road, becoming Manitoba Highway 15 as it passes by the Perimeter Highway .
