He served one term as Minnesota State Auditor from 1975 to 1979, and was Minnesota State Treasurer from 1983 to 1987.

A member of the Republican Party of Minnesota, Anderson represents district 33A in the northeastern Twin Cities metropolitan area, which includes the cities of Forest Lake, Hugo, and Mahtomedi and parts of Washington County.
