Galls (upper left and right) formed on acorns on the branch of a pedunculate (or English) oak tree by the parthenogenetic generation Andricus quercuscalicis.. The large 2 cm gall growth appears as a mass of green to yellowish-green, ridged, and at first sticky plant tissue on the bud of the oak, that breaks out as the gall between the cup and the acorn.
The acorn is the nut of the oaks and their close relatives (genera Quercus, Notholithocarpus and Lithocarpus, in the family Fagaceae).
The acorn contributes to the overcup oak's common name. The acorns are almost entirely covered by their cup, hence the name overcup. [3] The cup has gray, pubescent scales. The acorns also have a unique spongy shell that make them buoyant. [8] The pericarp of overcup oak acorns is unusually large for oaks and makes up 50% of acorn mass.
The white tailed deer is also known to utilize it for cover. For white-tailed and mule deer, the Arizona white oak is highly palatable as well. The only species known to consume the acorns in quantity is the thick-billed parrot. [9] The Arizona white oak can also be used as an ornamental plant.

Men frenzied with exhaustion and reckless exuberance, eyes and throats burning from dust and smoke, in a battle that erupted after Taliban insurgents castrated a young boy in the village, knowing his family would summon nearby Marines for help and the Marines would come ...
Curculio glandium eggs are deposited in acorns by the adult weevil chewing channels into the fruit. The eggs are then released using an ovipositor, a long, narrow organ featured in female weevils. [2] These do not reach the acorn's embryo and are healed by the plant, sealing the holes and protecting the eggs from parasites.
