Red thread disease is a fungal infection found on lawns and other turfed areas. It is caused by the corticioid fungus Laetisaria fuciformis and has two separate stages. The stage that gives the infection its name is characterised by very thin, red, needle-like strands extending from the grass blade.
This is not effective as a treatment, only as a prevention tool. Similarly, growers are proactive in their prevention of the disease, ensuring the proper fungicide applications. As previously stated, the importance of this disease can be severe, but growers tend to plant resistant varieties in areas where rust has been prevalent.
