Chittenden County (/ ˈ tʃ ɪ t ən d ən /) is the most populous county in the U.S. state of Vermont. As of the 2020 census , its population was 168,323. [ 1 ] The county seat is Vermont's most populous municipality, the city of Burlington .

It is the largest town by area in Vermont, slightly larger than Stowe in Lamoille County. The town is split in two by a ridge of the Green Mountains, and only the western half of the town is settled. The village of Chittenden is in the southwest corner of the town. Much of the town remains unbroken forest.
