The Makarov pistol or PM (Russian: Пистолет Макарова, romanized: Pistolet Makarova, IPA: [pʲɪstɐˈlʲet mɐˈkarəvə], lit. 'Makarov's Pistol') is a Soviet semi-automatic pistol. Under the project leadership of Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov, it became the Soviet Union's standard military and Militsiya side arm in 1951. [6]
After the end of World War II, it continued producing firearms, both for military (Makarov pistols) and hunting applications, and later high-tech weapons and civilian machinery. In 1948, the plant began production of Margolin pistols. In 1956, the plant began production of IZh-56 combination guns.
Its design was based on the R-92 compact revolver chambered in 9x18mm Makarov for sale to police. A variant (R-92S) was made in 9x17mm Short for use by private security officers and bodyguards. The Udar-S ("Service") U94S [12.3x22mmR PM-32] is designed as a conventional revolver for use by private security, bodyguards, or security-conscious VIPs.
Nikolay Fyodorovich Makarov (Russian: Никола́й Фёдорович Мака́ров; 22 May [O.S. 9 May] 1914 – 13 May 1988) was a Soviet firearms designer, most notable for his Makarov pistol. He was given the title Hero of Socialist Labour in 1974.
The Lebedev pistol (Russian: Пистолет Лебедева) is a Russian semi-automatic pistol, produced under Kalashnikov Concern and designed by Dmitry Lebedev. It was introduced in 2015 as the PL-14 and was redesignated to the PL-15 in 2016, [ 3 ] [ 4 ] with a compact version, the PL-15K , introduced in 2017.

During the latter half of the 20th century, it was a standard military pistol cartridge of the Soviet Union and the Eastern Bloc, analogous to the 9×19mm Parabellum in NATO and Western Bloc military use.
