The Nissan Frontier is a nameplate used by Nissan in several regions as an alternative to the Navara and NP300 nameplates. In North America, the nameplate was used from 1997 to 2021, replacing the Hardbody. Since 2021, the Frontier sold in the US and Canada has been a separate model distinct from the globally marketed Navara/Frontier.
The 5R05, also called RE5R05A (Nissan part), JR507E/JR509E (Jatco part) or TG5C/TG5D "5EAT" (Subaru part), is a Jatco 5-speed automatic transmission, released in 2002, used in rear wheel drive or 4X4 vehicles with longitudinal engines. It shares little to nothing in common with the older 5R01 transmission.
The first Nissan/Jatco transmission, the Jatco 3N71 transmission, used a simple naming scheme: the "3" meant "3-speed", and the remainder was the series number.
Nissan engineers wanted the VG to have improved performance, fuel economy, reliability, and refinement, while being both lighter and more compact than its predecessor. The resulting engine was designed by Nissan from scratch, and shared few mechanical components with its predecessor, or with any other automaker.
