All small birds look uniform hot or hot with darker (colder) wings and tails. For identifying species of e.g. songbirds, you need to switch to binoculars. In your case, you will have success in short-grass areas and in the open country. It is much faster to see small birds on the ground or in a bare bush using thermal.
