The Johnnie Walker Black Label forms part of the core range of best-selling blended whiskies from Scotch whisky giant Diageo. It sits between the Red Label and Gold Label in the range that also includes the Green Label 15 years old, 18 years old and Blue Label as permanent expressions.
As many as forty whiskies make up this satisfyingly complex blend. The nose and flavour are a wonderful combination of dry smokiness, with rich malt and peat overtones balanced by hints of cedar and fruit with trademark dark chocolate and vanilla sweetness.
Reportedly, some 40 or so distilleries’ wares now contribute to the Johnnie Walker series. All of the components for the Black Label have been aged for a minimum of 12 years, with the final blend bottled at 40% ABV after chill-filtration and the addition of colouring. 70cl bottles currently retail around £28 GBP in the UK.
It’s been more than 10 years since we reviewed Johnnie Walker’s iconic Black Label (here) and, considering it’s one of the best-selling Scotch whiskies in the world, we thought the ubiquitous blended Scotch deserved a fresh review.
Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch is an okay choice within the blended scotch category. It presents a balanced profile with smoky and peaty notes, complemented by a hint of sweetness. While it lacks the depth and complexity of some single malt counterparts, its smoothness and approachability make it suitable for a wide audience.
