Normandale is a semi-rural suburb of Lower Hutt City, New Zealand, on the western hills of the Hutt Valley.It consists of two main roads – Normandale Road and Miromiro Road – and the hills between, and is a five minute drive from the Lower Hutt city centre.
The road was first formed during the 1870s. [1] From the 1940s to the 1970s there were proposals for a railway line, the Haywards–Plimmerton Line , via this route. In June 2010 a road assessment programme found that the Haywards Hill road was amongst the worst in the Wellington region, scoring only 2 out a possible 5. [ 2 ]
The Wainuiomata Hill Road is the only road into and out of Wainuiomata, connecting the suburb with Gracefield and Waiwhetu. Four lanes wide (two in each direction), it is one of the steepest roads in the Wellington region; on the Lower Hutt side, the road climbs 195 metres in 1.9 km, resulting in an average grade of 10.3%.
