James Hogg (1770 – 21 November 1835) was a Scottish poet, novelist and essayist who wrote in both Scots and English. As a young man he worked as a shepherd and farmhand, and was largely self-educated through reading.
Hogg was apparently prompted to suggest a relaunch in the summer of 1828 after an enthusiastic expression of appreciation of the work by Mrs Mary Anne Hughes, and left-over sheets of the first edition were re-issued in Edinburgh as The Suicide's Grave; or, Memoirs and Confessions of a Sinner. In the early 1850s, De Quincey prepared the first collected edition of his works for publisher James Hogg. For that edition, he undertook a large-scale revision of the Confessions, more than doubling the work's length. Most notably, he expanded the opening section on his personal background, until it consumed more than two-thirds of the whole.

A Series of Lay Sermons on Good Principles and Good Breeding was published in London on 19 April 1834 by James Fraser. [3] There were no further editions until a critical edition by Gillian Hughes appeared in 1997 as Volume 5 in the Stirling/South Carolina Research Edition of The Collected Works of James Hogg published by Edinburgh University Press.
