The J.J. Deal and Son Carriage Factory was built in portions over the span of 1893–1909. The company produced multiple models of the Deal Automobile here from 1908 to 1911, but went out of business in 1915. It was later used by the Kiddie Brush & Toy Company. The community was founded in 1868 as East Traverse Bay, renamed to Traverse Bay in 1873 and to East Bay in 1874. A post office at the location operated from 1868 to 1879. [ 5 ] Today, the community is largely urbanized, and is located nearby Traverse City State Park .
